Hill Cottage garden borders Afton Nature Reserve the footpath to which (taking you to Freshwater Bay in 10 mins and Yarmouth in 45 mins) is reached just outside of the property.  Freshwater Bay, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty has clean, clear waters and both sandy and shingle beaches, perfect for days at the seaside.  From the bay you could pick up the coastal paths over Tennyson Down or the Heritage Trail – the views are fabulous and, if walking towards Alum Bay and the Needles Battery (victorian fort and rocket testing centre) you will find yourselves looking over the English Channel on one side and The Solent on the other – truly surrounded by the sea. The golf course. is just above the bay, our local activities centre runs canoeing/coasteering and the independent lifeboat has open days and a shop for ice creams etc

There is a cafe above the bay with fantastic sea views and close by is Dimbola Lodge the former home of victorian pioneer photographer, Julia Margaret Cameron, with its galleries, tea rooms and shop. Our old fashioned grocers, a 15 min walk away is always popular, providing essential provisions, papers, wines and local produce. There is also a new bistro, The Piano Cafe, close to the grocers  with a  wonderful downland vista.

The nature reserve footpath will also lead you to many eateries including, the Red Lion in Freshwater and many in Yarmouth
